Going home

The final day of our international exchange program was entirely dedicated to navigating the complex, multi-modal logistics of our journey back to Slovenia. Our departure from Zaragoza began at the local transport hub, where Jorge generously drove us to ensure a seamless transition to our regional transit. After a brief waiting period at the terminal, we boarded the intercity coach scheduled to transport us from Zaragoza to the capital city of Madrid. The overland bus journey lasted precisely three and a half hours, providing us with a final opportunity to observe the changing Spanish landscapes. Upon our arrival in Madrid, we immediately navigated the city’s transit infrastructure to reach our designated airport terminal at Madrid-Barajas.

To ensure efficiency and compliance with aviation protocols, our first priority at the terminal was to check in our oversized luggage. Once our baggage was successfully processed through the automated handling systems, we sought out dining options and decided to eat at a terminal Burger King. We quickly noted that the airport franchise featured highly inflated prices, which is a common economic characteristic of captive consumer markets in major international transit hubs. Following our meal, we navigated through the security checkpoints and spent approximately two and a half hours at the departure gate waiting for our flight. Our aerial transit consisted of a direct flight operating from Madrid to Venice Marco Polo Airport in Italy.

Upon touchdown in Venice, we proceeded directly to the baggage reclaim carousels to efficiently retrieve our luggage from the arrival belt. After clearing the arrivals terminal, we exited the airport to meet our designated GoOpti shuttle van chauffeur at the pre-arranged pickup location. Before commencing the long-distance drive to Slovenia, the shuttle service required a short detour to the neighboring city of Treviso to pick up additional passengers at the Treviso Airport. This operational adjustment expanded our travel itinerary but demonstrated the optimized efficiency of shared corporate airport transfers. During the subsequent journey toward Ljubljana, the driver made a few scheduled stops along the route to systematically drop off the passengers from Treviso at their respective destinations. These brief operational halts allowed us to rest and reflect on the incredible academic and personal experiences we accumulated over the past weeks. Ultimately, the GoOpti shuttle successfully reached our final destination in Ljubljana, allowing us to disperse and return to our respective homes. We finally arrived safely at our doorsteps exactly at midnight, officially concluding our remarkable international student exchange.
