Electrode welding

On Thursday, after our regular work shifts, we gathered at the vocational school at 18:00 to attend a specialized practical class on welding techniques. Participating in such technical workshops provides invaluable hands-on experience that complements our broader academic and professional development. Upon arrival, the primary focus was directed toward occupational health and safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment. We were equipped with full personal protective equipment (PPE), including heavy-duty welding jackets, gloves, and specialized auto-darkening welding helmets. After changing into this protective gear, we proceeded to the workshop floor to join our classmates who were managing the session.

The peer-instructors began by introducing the fundamental principles of shielded metal arc welding, commonly known as stick or electrode welding. They meticulously explained the crucial technical variables involved, such as maintaining the correct arc length, managing the electrode angle, and setting the proper current amperage. Furthermore, we were thoroughly briefed on critical safety hazards, with particular emphasis on avoiding direct ocular exposure to dangerous ultraviolet radiation and managing toxic fumes. Following the theoretical briefing, the experienced classmates provided a live demonstration, showing the precise hand stability required to lay a consistent weld bead.

Once the demonstration concluded, it was our turn to step into the welding booths and practically test our skills on basic pieces of structural steel. Striking the initial electrical arc proved to be a challenging task that required patience and a delicate touch. Throughout the practical trial, our peers closely monitored our technique, providing real-time feedback and corrective guidance on our posture and travel speed. This interactive mentoring allowed us to quickly adjust our approach, resulting in noticeably cleaner and stronger joints by the end of the session. After successfully completing our practice welds, we dedicated time to the vital task of workshop maintenance by cleaning our respective stations and organizing the tools. Finally, we returned all borrowed protective gear to the storage inventory, ensuring the facility was left in pristine condition for the next class. This hands-on workshop not only expanded our technical competencies but also reinforced the value of peer-to-peer knowledge sharing in a collaborative learning environment.
