Bus ride diaries

Every morning we take a 20-minute bus ride to school. During these daily rides around the city on Tenerife, we started noticing many interesting things about the local buses and the way people use them.

The buses are bright green and operated by TITSA. They are usually on time and surprisingly fast. On our first ride, we were amazed at how quickly the buses were driving up and down the hills on the way to school. The drivers clearly try their best to stay on schedule, which sometimes leads to some interesting moments during the ride.

Inside the buses there are often open windows and air conditioning. Most of the time I found this a bit unnecessary because it is usually already quite cold. One time I decided to close the window because I was freezing. Unfortunately, I closed it a bit too loudly and ended up scaring half of the bus.

Even during the busy hours, the buses were not as crowded as the ones in Ljubljana. However, we did learn an important rule about bus travel here. One day we were travelling to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and noticed people standing in a line near the bus stop sign. At first we didn鈥檛 think much of it. When the bus arrived, we tried to get on, but the people in the line quickly stopped us and told us to go to the back.

So we joined the line, but unfortunately we were so far back that we didn鈥檛 manage to get on that bus and had to wait another half an hour. Later on the next bus, I saw another couple trying to skip the line and being told exactly the same thing. That day we learned an important lesson: on Tenerife, you always respect the line.
