If there’s one thing you can’t skip in Tampere, it’s the sauna experience. This city takes saunas seriously—so much so that it’s officially known as the sauna capital of the world. With over 50 public saunas, ranging from historic wood-heated ones to modern lakeside retreats, there’s something for everyone.

I started my sauna journey at Rajaportti Sauna, the oldest still-operating public sauna in Finland. Walking into the warm, dimly lit space, I could feel the history in the air. The heat was intense but comforting, and as the locals poured water on the stones, the steam (or löyly, as they call it) wrapped around us like a heavy blanket.

For a more nature-focused experience, I headed to Rauhaniemi, a lakeside sauna with a direct path into the icy waters of Lake Näsijärvi. The first time stepping into the freezing lake was a shock, but after a few rounds of hot sauna and cold dips, I finally understood why Finns love this tradition so much—it’s incredibly refreshing.
