Tønder

Tønder is a town in the Region of Southern Denmark. With a population of 7,491. Its history says the town was granted inport privileges by the Hanseatic League in 1243. Making Tønder Denmark’s oldest privileged market town. In 1532 it was hit by severe floods. Water levels were reaching 1,8 m in St Laurent’s church, that is 5,3 m above sea level. In the 1550s, Tønder’s port lost direct access to the sea due to dykes being built to the west of town. (Dykes are long walls or embankment builts to prevent flooding from the sea.) When we arrived in Tønder we were quite surprised to see how empty the town was. Here is a lot of older people and less youngsters. Tønder is a small and narrow town, with very few stores, but it still has a lot to see.
