Cold Outside, Delicious Inside

Before I left for Finland, my parents were a little worried about the food. They kept asking me if I would survive a whole month eating something completely different from what I was used to. To be honest, I was also thinking about it. I imagined that I would probably end up eating fish every day for a month.

On the afternoon after we arrived in Jyväskylä, we decided to go out and find something to eat. My friend Bernard, who somehow looks like a man in his forties even though he is much younger, was already extremely hungry. At first we were walking around the city searching for a Taco Bell. While walking down the street, we suddenly noticed a sign with a picture of Korean or Chinese food and a price written next to it: 12,90 €. We looked at each other for about two seconds, and without saying much we immediately walked inside.

The restaurant was quite small and there were only a few people sitting inside. Right away we noticed that there was a buffet. Using Google Translate, we asked one of the workers what exactly we get for the price of 12,90 €. She simply replied: “Everything.” That answer sounded very promising.

While I was eating from my first plate, Bernard suddenly asked me if this was an all-you-can-eat restaurant. I laughed and told him that it probably wasn’t, because you would never find an all-you-can-eat restaurant in Finland for only about 13 euros. However, Bernard was not convinced. He turned around and asked a person sitting behind us. It turned out that it actually was an all-you-can-eat buffet.

At that moment we both became much more motivated to continue eating. The chicken there was incredibly good. To be honest, I’m still not completely sure if it was actually chicken, but it tasted amazing. After about three full plates each, we were completely full. With happy stomachs we slowly walked back to the apartment and went to sleep.

On Wednesday we decided to try something different and went to a sushi restaurant. It was also an all-you-can-eat place, but this time the price was around 20 euros. It was only my third time trying sushi in my life, but I have to say that I really liked it.

Another great thing here is the food at school. Every day we have lunch there, and the meals are surprisingly healthy and tasty. The best part is that we can also take as much food as we want. After a few days here I can honestly say that the food in Jyväskylä has been a very pleasant surprise. So far I haven’t eaten anything that tasted bad or disappointed me.
